Receiving a Genuine Compliment
I found this study today that is really interesting. It’s a little different, but I can back it up with real experience from my training clients both online and off.
How A Compliment Makes You Feel and Do Better
Research carried out in Japan by the National Institute for Physiological Sciences, Graduate University for Advanced Studies, and the Nagoya Institute of Technology… found scientific proof that people doing exercises (all encompassing) perform better when another person compliments them.
They study step up typing exercises. I know… it’s not physical exercise or anything really close to that, but hear me out on why this relates to burning fat.
There were three groups…
- One group included an evaluator that would complement the people typing the sequence they had to learn.
- Another group included people that could watch a participant receive a compliment.
- The final group had to evaluate their own performance on the typing test on a graph.
Compliments Helped Group 1 Perform Much Better
According to Professor Sadato, “To the brain, receiving a compliment is as much a social reward as being rewarded money. We’ve been able to find scientific proof that a person performs better when they receive a social reward after completing an exercise.There seems to be scientific validity behind the message ‘praise to encourage improvement’. Complimenting someone could become an easy and effective strategy to use in the classroom and during rehabilitation.”
What Does This Have To Do With Burning Fat?
The same phenomonon happens all the time when I am training my clients either in person or just simply talking with them on the forum at Fit Women’s Weekly.
By encouraging, complimenting, and building up their personal belief, my clients visibly give another 50% or more effort. It’s awesome because you can see them tap into another level.
When they do they are not only happier but they burn more calories and give that workout more than they would have.
And like I mentioned, it happens by just typing encouragement and compliments to them too.
The caveat is it has to be genuine, but why would you not genuinely compliment somebody?
