Bollywood Aerobics: The Coming Hollywood Fitness Fad

Interesting name, Bollywood… I heard someone mention it and had to come home and learn about this new fitness craze!

It is a group aerobic class using Indian dance moves and music into an American workout fad. It was first brought to American’s eyes with Slumdog Millionaire and is growing in popularity in several gyms.

Bollywood Aerobics reminds me a lot of belly dancing meets Zumba. Shaking your hips, rolling your stomach and swaying to the music for the entire class to bring up your heart rate and get a cardio workout. The music is unlike anything you’ve worked out to before… Classic Indian.

The tagline of the class is that you’re there to experience the music, enjoy the movements and get a killer workout. There is no worry about technique and if you just move from the time class starts till the time the last song finishes you’re doing it exactly right. That is what makes this class a pretty decent option for women who want to take a dance class to burn off calories but don’t know how to dance.

So is Bollywood Aerobics a good workout?

In terms of cardio and endurance, yes this is a great workout. You’re heart rate goes up, you won’t get bored and it sure beats running on the roads! The experts say that depending on the intensity, you can burn any where from 250-400 calories in an hour.

Do you still need to strength train? Yes of course. This is an aerobic workout but it’s not going to do all that much for total body toning and tightening.

This is a great “fun workout” to do a few days a way but I don’t recommend it being your sole workout. It’s still important to strength train to tone up all over and increase your metabolism!
