Clean Eating Recipes: Just Call Me Jannie Appleseed

I don’t know about you but beside the cold and the early darkness when it comes to fall I always think about apples. I love fresh, mountain apples! I was so excited when a client brought me some the other day! And apples are practically queen of clean eating foods.

With the skin on apples are loaded with fiber… and remember fiber helps to keep your digestion system move food through your intestines, helps to keep you feeling fuller longer, and helps to keep blood sugar levels in check. Apples are also loaded with vitamins and minerals.

Apple-icious facts:

  1. Apples contain 15% of your daily fiber(~4 g per medium apple)
  2. High in antioxidants (especially the skin)
  3. Flavonoids for heart health
  4. High in Vitamin C
  5. The best apples… Fuji apples had the highest total phenolic and total flavonoid compounds with Red Delicious coming in second

What can I do with all these apples?

So now you have them but what can you do with them besides eat’um? There are lots of options! Here’s a few of my favorite clean eating apple recipes!

Grilled Apple Slices:

  • 1 med apple (doesn’t matter which kind)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp honey

In a mixing bowl combine the two spices. Don’t peel the apple, but use a knife to remove the core. From here, slice it in 1/4-1/2 inch slices. Sprinkle all the slices front and back with spices and drizzle with honey. You can use either a frying pan or a stove grill pan to cook the apple slices at med heat for about 3 minutes per side or until softened and browned. Enjoy!

Homemade Apple Sauce:

  • 3 apples, diced
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla

Place a pot of water on stove to boil. Add diced apples and allow to light boil for 10-15 minutes or until softened. Remove from heat, drain water. Add the rest of ingredients and mush with a fork or hand blender to desired consistency.
