Do You Ever Use Just Your Bicep Or Just Your Hamstring?

Isolated moves are ever popular in the gym, I mean just take a look at all the pretty machines that take up the floor space to make the gym looks like it offers all the must needs to get your body tight and lean. But that’s bogus! When do we ever use just one small muscle group?

Think about it this way…. when you pick something up off the floor are you using just your upper legs? Hell no, your core is involved (abs and lower back) your arms and a slew of other smaller stabilizer muscles are helping you get that box where it needs to go. So why train just one muscle at a time?

It’s much more efficient to use big compound body exercises (several muscle groups and joints are active) over small isolated exercises:

  1. You get a more balanced workout. Ever see people with jacked arms and little untoned legs? They aren’t working their body evenly and it shows.
  2. More calorie burn = more fat burn. Think of the small range of motion that goes into a bicep curl,  compared to a big move like a squat to press. That difference in range of motion is a big difference in the muscles used and the calorie burn you get.
  3. Works the stabilizer muscles to make your body work more efficiently
  4. Bigger muscles worked will lead to better changes in muscle toning.
  5. More time efficient, who wants to spend an hour working their biceps and triceps when you can get a better workout in less time using big compound exercises? In and out with a total body workout in less than 30 minutes!

I will not say that isolated moves are worthless, they do have their place every once in a while but they shouldn’t be the backbone of your workout. If you notice that your legs are getting much more defined then your arms, sure go and add a few arm isolated exercises to the end of your workout.

My personally… I have to add shoulder exercises because I have a hard time getting this area defined compared to the rest of my body.
