I have trained LOTS of women over the years and I have to say that the number one issue that women have when trying to get their bodies into shape is that they don’t really believe in themselves. Of course if you have a trainer, it helps because it is my job to help you feel like you can accomplish your goals and to make them a reality.
But if you’re going at it alone then this is really something you need to stand back and think about…
Are you a real believer?
Do you believe that you can lose those 15 lbs you’re tired of carrying around? Do you believe that you can eat healthy and give up fast food? Do you believe that you can look better than ever?
I ask this because a client of mine today kept thanking me for having so much faith in her. Of course I have faith in her… just because you’re out of shape today doesn’t mean you’re destined to stay out of shape forever. The same lady I mentioned above can’t do 5 “girl” push-ups… and I merely told her to remember this feeling because someday soon she will be able to do 10 real push-ups. That made her day because it made her think to herself… Wow, I can do this!
It’s important to keep these same positive reinforcements in your head if you don’t have a trainer. If you don’t believe then it isn’t going to happen. The workout will quickly lose its momentum, your healthy eating habits will fall by the wayside and you will end up right where you started, if not even a few pounds heavier and more depressed.
Be your own little “Engine That Could”
1. Tell yourself everyday (while looking in the mirror): “I am strong and powerful. I can and will make my
goals a reality”. Saying positive statements like this tells your brain you’re serious. It will start to get rid of those negative emotions that are floating around.
2. Push yourself. gradually make your workouts harder… have your exercises evolve. Start with girl push-ups… work your way up to 1 push-up… then two… then three. It’s like a step later. Rome wasn’t built overnight!
3. Track yourself. Every two weeks check yourself out by taking pictures. The scale means dittily to me but pictures tell the story.
4. Have support. Your husband, boyfriend, parents, friends, fitness group… who ever. Have someone that is a positive force in your life that won’t allow you to quit.
5. Fitness trainers. See your options for getting help from a trainer. Sure most trainers aren’t cheap but consider an online personal trainer for motivation.
The bottom line… believe in yourself and things will happen!
