I’m not sure how I feel about this new report, but I feel it’s my duty to give you the opportunity to decide on your own.
Make sure to read all the way down so you can give your opinion to the question of the day!
For the most part, most health experts have preached the importance of a pre and post workout snack, especially if
you workout first thing in the morning (I do!). The pre snack is so important, or so we thought, because after a night of sleep your body is void of carbohydrates which gives you the energy to get through a workout.
But new research posted today on MSN news, went against the grain (of course) and said that if you’re trying to lose body fat then you might be better off not eating before hand.
I agree the reasoning makes sense… if you’re low on carbs your body needs a different fuel to get you through the workout so you burn a larger percentage of body fat. Sweet deal! But here’s the other deal, if you don’t have anything in your stomach you will most likely have a pretty crappy workout in terms of excitement and intensity.
But then again, the subjects that they studied…. even though they didn’t perform as well their fat burning potential was higher than the eaters.
Now here is my issue… I have women all the time that come to my boot camp, and 90% of them don’t eat breakfast for their first workout. And it only takes that one time to change their eating habits because 99% the ladies don’t finsh the workout because they get dizzy, light-headed, and shaky. None of which looks like fun especially when you see their faces go from flushed to white to pale…
What’s your story… do you grab a small bite before you hit the gym? And if so what is your meal or snack of choice? Help out other women that always are looking for a great start to the day.
I personally eat breakfast every morning before I hit the gym, even if I am up and out the door in 30 minutes (which is normally the case). Here are a few of my favorites pre-workout foods and breakfasts:
- Protein pancake (see eat clean pancake recipe)
- I whole egg scrambled with 4 egg whites with garlic powder sprinkled on top, and hot sauce of course!
- Peanut butter egg white omelet… sounds crazy. Whisk up 2 egg whites and pour in a small skillet. Heat like an omelet. Instead of cheese and other omelet fillings spread on peanut butter and fold up. I also like a small drizzle of honey.

I ALWAYS eat before a workout. I have passed out before from not eating. I usually eat Special K with red berries and a few pieces of lunch meat for breakfast. Then I eat an apple and cheese after my workout.
I don’t know about that reasoning. Maybe at first your body will use the carbs for energy which is actually a really good thing. After your workout when your body continues to burn calories as your muscles that will just help to burn more calories.
Sounds like MSN is full of it to me.
I was always told to eat first; however, I have so much body fat right now that if this is true I might re-think eating first. I don’t workout first thing in the morning, but after reading this I just might start! Thanks Taylor.
