I am so tired of hearing about the world becoming fatter… Obesity is now an epidemic and the sad thing is:
It’s not just the adults having to deal with carrying excess fat around.
Childhood obesity is a huge issue! In fact statistics estimate that 60% of kids in America are considered obese and 24% of preschoolers are overweight. This is so sad… and while I try not to point fingers I do thinks it is necessary to look at parents. Parents aim to raise their children to be healthy and successful… what parent doesn’t want the best for their kids? Well, being fit and at a healthy weight is part of it.
A recent study showed that there are 3 factors that if implemented into households with preschoolers can help to cut a child’s risk of becoming obese by 60%…. that’s HUGE!
3 Ways To Fight Childhood Obesity
- Sleep. Kids that get 10.5 hours of sleep a night can lower obesity risk up to 25%. Sleep is of course important, but for kids under 4, getting this amount of sleep helps carry out important functions and of course that means more time for you and your husband. If you kid goes to bed 1-2 hours earlier think of what you can do! Movies, baths, reading, etc.
- Hide the remote. Yes, I am typing this while I watch the news, but we all know how TV can influence obesity. The more TV means less activity. Keeping TV time to under 2 hours a day can cut your child’s risk again by up to 25%! Instead use the time to play hide and seek, color, read, play chase, etc… get creative.
- Eat like a family. Families that enjoy dinner together at the table show significantly less obesity rates than those that eat in front of the TV, on the couch or that eat out. You eat less, you enjoy each other’s company and you get to really spend quality time together. Remember, as your kids grow up the quality time often becomes less and less, so enjoy it now.
More Motivation To Do All 3
- Obesity prevalence in families that practice all three was only 14.3%
- The odds of obesity in children that practiced these three lifestyle routines was reduced by 37%!
- Each event is linked to decreasing obesity risk by 23-25%… that’s huge. And these are simple lifestyle changes that you can do for your kids… and I have a feeling that it will help not just your kids but the adults in your family as well!
My Secret Fit Kids Event
Childhood obesity is really important and I hold it dear to my heart. I teach gymnastics to kids and I see the battle every day. In fact, I have a little girl that weighs twice as much as the other kids her age and it breaks my heart each time I tell her I can’t help her with certain skills. And it makes me angry each week when she tells me her parents want her to lose weight but then I spot them at the snack machine buying her a post workout treat.
To help spread the word and help with the cause Dan and I are in the process of putting together a big workout event to help raise money for Charleston’s Louie’s Kids. It’s a nonprofit, aimed to helping educate kids and families on fighting childhood obesity.
Lets remember, that if we’re seriuos about getting healthier as a nation, we have to teach our kids how to be healthy. Out of experience, I know how hard it can be to be raised in a not so healthy family and then try and break all those habits. If I had grown up with healthy nutrition being stressed then it would have been much easier to adopt my lifestyle!
As more info is put together, I will keep you posted on the BIG EVENT!
