That's great you're starting to get out of your comfort zone at the gym! It's fine to do your cardio but I would move it to the end of the workout instead of the beginning, as this will help your weight training to be more productive. Your reps are okay for beginning but make sure you're upping it and not doing the same exercises with the same weight each time. Have you checked out theartofweightlifting.com? it can give you some great workout ideas for beginners. As for your cookie cravings, simply get rid of them... out of house means you can cheat. It takes a few days and then you won't think about them again. Right now it's more of a habit and to break the habit you gotta get them out of your way. Good luck.

So happy I found this! I have spoken to a few different trainers and I have been told different things, but what you're saying makes sense. I had a gym membership a few years ago and I usually started off by doing 30 minutes of cardio with a heart rate of 170-180 consistently and did not focus on weigh lifting because I was concerned about muscle building to the point where I would look masculine. Anyways, I did not see the results I wanted so I stopped going to the gym.I recently joined a new gym and I still continue to start my workouts with about 30 minutes of cardio with a heartrate of 170-180 , should I still keep doing this? Now, at the new gym I decided to introduce myself to the machines and weights. I have begun by doing 3 sets of 10 reps at a weight I am able to properly complete a full rep slowly.. do you think this is acceptable? Also, now that I'm back in the gym I feel the need to treat myself to a cookie... all the time!! any tips for that?

I like your warm-up, and this does have the potential to be a good workout Haley! But I noticed yo mentioned machines, have you tried weights? The free weights, and also make sure you're not using the same weight or doing the same exercises or your body will adapt and you don't get the benefits. I like that your workouts are total body, you're on the right track. Just think bigger... moves like dumbbells squats/lunges/burpees...

Hey im Haley. My workout is fairly simple, I start out on the treadmill, on a speed 4 i do that for 1 minute then go up 5 clicks and do that for 1 minute, i do the same thing until i get to speen 7.5 and do that for a full song (which ever song that just started to play on my ipod workout mix). After that I move onto abs, then legs, then arms, then weights. on all ab, leg, and arm machines I do 10 reps of 10, alternating though so i normally start with 5 reps of 10, go through all the machines, then do another round of 2 reps of 10, then my last round is just 1 rep of 10. then hit the steam room and suana. including my steam room and sauna time im normally at the gym for 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours. i try to change things up, a few times a week. but is this a good workout?

Hey Brittney! Thanks for writing! That's great you're working out regularly however make sure that you're changing it up. You should be changing your weight/reps regularly to keep progressing. Otherwise your body will plateau pretty quickly. If you're doing 20 pounds now, aim for 25 tomorrow, always change it up in some way. For elliptical workouts, have you looked into intervals? They are 9x more effective then long steady state workouts and are only 20-30 minutes long. Just a few suggestions. For workout programs for strength training and cardio have you visited my site, theartofweightlifting.com?
