I was reading a magazine today (which I will leave out the name) and I saw a fitness article for women on pyramid workouts. Knowing how pryramids are a great way to build strength and muscle of course I took the time to read it…

After the first paragram I started to laugh out loud! Not only did this particular trainer say pyramids can spot reduce he was also promoting tiny isolated muscle exercises like bicep curls and tricep kickbacks. First off you can’t spot

reduce fat… your body will lose it first where it wants to. And second, if you want to help women lose fat these little exercises are going to do much.

But it gets even more hilarious… I read his sample workout which was designed for in shape, young women (in their 20s) and it went something like this…

  • 1 set: 12 reps of 5 lbs weights
  • 2 set: 10 reps of 8 lbs weights
  • 3 set: 8 reps of 10 lbs weights

Wow, don’t strain too hard now! But seriously if you are a woman that really wants to tone up, build some lean muscle ans lose fat you have to actually push yourself. You should be using a weight where you can do 8 but not 9 reps! For most active, in-shape women 8 reps of 10 isn’t squat (no pun intended)!

But pyramids are a great women’s weight training program that works for strenght, muscle gains and a fat burn. But use a weight that you can barely finish each set. Remember, each set should be increased with weight or if you want you can do reverse pyramids where you start heaviest first with fewer reps and work in reverse.

Trainers like this guy make me so angry because you and I know that there is some 21 year old out there reading the article and is going to be really disapointed when she never gets results.
