Kicking Butt Like Bruce Lee… Literally

Butt Kicking Bruce!!

When you think of Bruce Lee what is the first thing that pops into your head? Probably something about him being the best martial artist ever! Ok, so I am not becoming some great martial artist… though I won’t lie, I would love to get into karate or kung fu!

So what does a small man from China have to do with a small blonde like me? I am studying him and his fitness regiment. Talk about one dedicated man! I know I love to work out… but he REALLY loved to workout and made it his goal to do everything he could to be the best martial artist, to be in the best shape, and to look the best (he loved to show off his muscles).

Every day Bruce spent hours training and working out. And because he was really into physiology and exercise science Bruce tracked all of his programs… which kicks ass for us!

There is a book Bruce Lee: The Art Of Expressing The Human Body which is what I am reading now. I love it! I love seeing the determination that he had, not just with his workouts but with his life. It’s great motivation and helps to keep me more disciplined… lets face it my wedding is 2 months away, I need all the motivation I can get!!

Today I tried out a circuit that he used to do a lot, it was actually really tough! 30 seconds at each station, trying to do as many reps as possible. I don’t have the entire program in front of me but it included exercises like:

  1. Pull-ups
  2. Leg press
  3. Leg extensions
  4. Arm curls
  5. Calf raises (standard, toes in and toes out)
  6. Shoulder Press
  7. Arm Adduction on Cable
  8. Deadlifts
  9. Bench Press
  10. 1.5 minute run
  11. and a few more I can’t recall now…

The point is, that even in the 60s Bruce was preaching the same workout philosophies that I find myself trying to preach today! LOVE IT!!!!! Circuits at that time weren’t a big deal, they were still a new idea so no one was doing them, except Bruce Lee.

He really was ahead of the time when it came to strength training… he was into total body workouts (most people where doing split body building routines), training just 3 days a week, and changing up the workouts a lot… to make sure never to “settle”! It’s pretty cool to see the ideas that I share with the late athlete! Let’s just hope I can get my abs looking even a little bit like his!!!

I can’t wait to get to the nutrition part of the book, I have a feeling I will find some stuff I have to share!

But for now, A Few Words from Master Bruce Lee:

“Seriously, if you always put limits to what you can do, physically or anything else, it will spread over into the rest of your life. It’ll spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level.”

Had fun with this… just add some girl parts and clothes of course!
