I have decided to make a change in my diet… a big change for me. There is a little body fat I am trying to get rid of and I have known for a long time what I needed to do I just didn’t want to do it…
Eliminate artificial sweeteners from my life.
Recent research (some done by a collegue of mine, Cassandra Forsythe) shows that your body reacts the same way to artificial sweeteners as it does the real deal sugars. The body doesn’t know that they are fake, it just knows the sweet stuff is in the body and it uses it as sugar… which means increased blood sugar, increased insulin and increased promotion of fat storage.
Bye-Bye To My Favorites
Boo… since I am addicted to sugar-free foods like Crystal Light, Pudding Cups, Vanilla Coffee Mate, Syrup and of course just plain old Splenda in my coffee (if I am out of CoffeeMate). I have known for a while that the body reacts like this to sugar alcohols (the fake stuff) but I have tried to push it out of my mind. But now the time has come to push it out.
And since I do the grocery shopping that means that Dan will also be eliminating sugar-free foods. My first step to fix my “fix” was to buy green tea bags infused with raspberries, I have already made a big jug and set it in the fridge to chill so hopefully this will replace my water flavor packs.
I haven’t decided what to do about my coffee, I wish I could just use skim milk as a creamer and be done with it, but I just don’t like it and I can’t live without my morning cup of joe… so if anyone has suggestions I am definitely listening!

Personally, I can’t stand artificial sweeteners. The taste makes me nauseous, and aside from the calories, it does seem the body reacts in every other way as if they were the calorie-containing counterparts. I figure if I’m going to have the stuff, I’ll just go whole-hog and have the real stuff.
So, I still consume regular sugar, just far less than I once did.
Have you tried Stevia? It tastes a lot like sugar, has no calories and is completely natural. It comes from a plant. I use a few drops in my coffee every morning.
Hey Emily… I have not tried that, but I really do now? Can you get that at any grocery store?
I am very curious. I actually don’t use sugar in my coffee, but I want to know more about this Stevia!
I use Stevia and get it in the health food section of my grocery store in packets or liquid. It is great for sweetening plain yogurt, fruit, oatmeal, and making sugar free lemon or limeades with juice from fresh lemons or limes (waaay better than crystal light!). But for me, I think it’s nasty in coffee and chocolate types of drinks. It has more of an herbal-sweet taste kind of like fennel does and it just doesn’t mix nicely with those bitter flavors. I just use real cream in my coffee, but another natural sweetener to try is xylitol. It’s made from bark and has been shown to prevent cavities. You could also try a skinny latte with a little ground cinnamon to add protein and tone down the coffee taste if you are a skim milk drinker. Good luck!
thanks for the tip Ginger! I tried it in coffee not too long ago and I agree… not so good. But I haven’t thought about it for yogurt which is a great idea! I love the lattes when I add some cinnamon and protein, I make it in the magic bullet and turn it into a frappachino!
