Old Shoes Make For Crappy Workouts

by TaylorR on August 1, 2010

I have learned my lesson! I am normally really good about changing up my shoes every 6 months but I will admit that I got lazy. Workout shoes are one of my favorite things to buy but I have put it on the back burner lately just out of pure laziness… and now it’s kicking me in the ass… well knees actually.

My great workouts that I was having have started to suffer because of knee pain. It kills me to run, walk down the stairs and do a lot of leg exercises. Out of all the things that have caused me pain, my knees have been pretty good over the years. So I was pretty concerned. Anyways… I did my research and talked with lots of runners and it seems that I have “runner’s knees”… basically inflammation in the joint caused by none other than:

WEARING OLD SHOES!

So, I am researching new shoes now trying to narrow down the ones I like. I think I am going to go with a pair of Pumas.

Possibly my next pair of shoes... at puma.com

I loved my pumas in the past, but they stopped making the particular pair I was in love with. But they have a new make and model that I am willing to try out. I figure anything is better than the year old shoes I am wearing now, right?

What are your favorite workout shoes? I would love opinions!!

If you’re like me and have been avoiding new shoes…

Reasons you might want to toss old workout shoes in the trash:

  1. Decrease support and stability
  2. Decrease shock absorption (stress from running is HUGE on the body)
  3. Increase risk of injury (knee pain, shin splints, stress fractures, back pain, ankle issues, etc)
  4. And much more!

Bottom line, do as I say not as I do so you can avoid my poor, stupid blonde mistake. Now I am stuck resting my legs for a few weeks until they heel up. Not exactly what I had in mind a month before my wedding!

I should have followed my advice from last year:

Is it okay to do workouts in my bare feet? Eg. lunges, squats, jumping jacks? I usually work out in my house itself. Thanks!

I just bought new shoes too. I got Asics Gel Phoenix. I have a lot of foot and toe problems and they are just so comfy and supportive, I love ‘em!

Hey Ell, actually it is ok to go barefoot. Taking off shoes allows you to evenly distribute your weight and some even swear that it’s better for you. I know a few people that lift heavy weights and do all their squats barefoot. They swear by it. It’s also a new running fad, though I don’t personally want to run down the road barefoot.
