Study Reveals High Protein Diets Help Women Lose Fat Faster!

by TaylorR on August 11, 2009

I have been on this band wagon for years now. I pretty much live on a higher protein diet than most women but it’s also because of my active lifestyle and my weight training. Either way, when it comes to losing fat high protein diets are the best way to shed fat (without losing much lean mass).

Here’s a few things I found in from a study published in my favorite site: PubMed.com:

In case you want to read the whole thing, click the title:

A randomized trial of a hypocaloric high-protein diet, with and without exercise, on weight loss, fitness, and markers of the Metabolic Syndrome in overweight and obese women.

The Facts On Women And High Protein Diets for Losing Fat Faster

You can’t argue with the facts… in a recent study performed on 60 women, each woman was placed on 1 of 4 diets: Control diet group; control diet with exercise, high protein diet, high protein diet with exercise. Each differed by

Fish is a great lean protein!

the ratio of carbs to protein they received to be able to get better results.

And here they are now… after 12 weeks of dieting the results were as followed: -2.1 kg for the Control group, -4.0 kg in the Con/Exercise group, -4.6 kg in the High Protein group, and -7.0 kg in the High Protein/Exercise.

I don’t know about you but I would have like to be in the high protein with exercise group and I would be jealous bing in the control group!

What These Doctors Summed Up About The Power Of The High Protein Diet For Women?

The high protein diet was superior to a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet either alone or when combined with an aerobic/resistance-training program in promoting weight loss and nitrogen balance, while similarly improving body composition and risk factors for the Metabolic Syndrome in overweight and obese Canadian women.

Why Is Protein So Freaking Awesome?

Out of the macro nutrients (carbs, fats and protein) protein takes the most work to break down. It takes a bunch of calories to burn and metabolize for use. Since protein is the building blocks for pretty much everything in the body: hormones, enzymes, muscle, and much more it has to be broken down to it’s smallest form before being used and rebuilt to how the body wants it.

And when it comes to cutting calories, the body often turns to muscle to sustain itself when you put it in calorie cutting mode. But if you’re giving it plenty of protein then it can leave the muscle you have alone and eat away at your fat instead.

But enough… all I can say is GO PROTEIN! My favorite is bison steaks and I am addicted to whey souffle.
