The Battery To The Beach Retirement Run

by TaylorR

Remember earlier in the week where I shared my fitness timeline?

Well, it looks like I am not the only one that changes their goals, loves, and fitness passions.

On Monday, my friend Jeanette posted this…

jeanette-goodbye

Jeanette has been my fit-friend since I first got fit. We met just as I was kicking off my boot camp and she was the first trainer I hired! We go way back.

We’ve cheered each other on, given each other advice, and given tough love to one another when we need to step it up.

I guess you can say we are each other’s Yoda when we need it. The roll going back and forth.

This weekend (tomorrow), to celebrate her breakup with running, we are ending on a runner’s high.

Battery To The Beach

Apparently, this is a real run route that many people do here. For some strange reason, I’ve never thought of it.

But when Jeanette suggested it a month ago, I shrugged my shoulders and as I always do when she suggests something, and said:

“What the heck, let’s do it.”

We will be starting at the Battery of downtown Charleston. From there, running over THE bridge to Mount Pleasant and continuing on to a 2nd bridge so that we end on Sullivan’s Island… the beach.

We’ve mapped our route, we know the milage and we’re set to go! To be honest, in my head the run seemed a lot farther than it maps out… at just around 11.5 miles.

Not so bad.

Afterwards, we’ll put her running shoes in a box decorated with race bibs and bury them in the sand between the dunes.

Okay, maybe that part won’t happen, but it would be pretty awesome.

I love that we’re doing this together and I can’t wait for the new adventures and goals that J sets as she turns her back to running.

I will make sure to share the adventure via Instagram, so if you’re not following me go ahead and start!

Name Your Favorite

I very rarely do quizzes or surveys on LiftingRevolution, however I came upon this “Name Your Favorite” survey from Bonnie and thought it would be a fun way to end the week.

Let’s do this…

Person: This is tough! I love a lot of people. But it was my niece’s birthday yesterday, so I’ll go with her, Lainey. Everytime I see her, she makes me smile. I love the innocence and excitement of a 3-year old.

My SIL and Lainey on vacation this week! Miss not being able to see her on her birthday!

Color: Blue has always been my favorite color! But I love green and purples too.

Food: Muddy Water’s Iced Lattes (does that count as a “food”?) and salads. I can’t get enough salads lately! This always happen when the temperatures are high.

Smell: I love the smell of Dove Soap. Also, sunscreen. Love sunscreen.

Book: This is tough… but I think my favorite is still Abraham Lincoln: Malice Towards None. Great biography!

Drink: Seltzer water with lime juice and iced lattes.

Fruit: I eat an apple every day… a pink lady.

FM-brussels

Vegetable: Brussel sprouts. We eat them every single day.

Workout: Kettlebells, sprints, intense bodyweight circuits.

Quote: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?” – Our Deepest Fear

Potato Chip Flavor: I haven’t had chips in years. I’m just not a big chip person.

Meal Of The Day: Breakfast! I got to bed excited to wake up for breakfast.

Ice Cream Flavor: Mint Chocolate Chip.

Season: I used to LOVE summer, but now I think I am more of a spring person. If the temperature could be 60-70 degrees every day, I would be happy. I guess I should move to San Francisco.

Dessert: Anything really, but I love frozen yogurt (even before it was so popular) with chocolate chips and coconut mixed in.

Your turn…

That is so awesome! I’m going to see if my friend Trish wants to attempt this with me and the babes! Have fun!! Lainey! Happy birthday beautiful girl!

You guys definitely need to! I don’t have a stroller, but would love to tag along!

  • http://abs-of-steel.com Abi@AbsofSteel

I really love that letter to running! Favorite fruit: I don’t actually have a favorite but right now I’m loving watermelon.

    • http://www.fitwomensweekly.com TaylorR

Watermelon is so good during the summer!

I think that’s a fun run to do to retire from running (btw the running world will miss ya Jeanette but I totally get it). I probably wouldn’t bury the running shoes though… maybe have a ceremonial stop at Fleet Feet on the way home and drop them in the donations bin? In fact I think I may run this 11.5 miler when I’m able to run again. I’ve never actually done that route, but it’s almost like the first half of the May Day Marathon.

I love pink lady apples! That’s our favorite kind but they are so hard to find in stores right now :(. Lately we are eating a lot of grapes and also raspberries (which are on sale at Costco). I also love a good salad- I had a great one from Foodies in West Ashley last week and Ladle’s has some good ones too.

    • http://www.fitwomensweekly.com TaylorR

We’re not really getting rid of her shoes, lol. It would be fun though! Pink ladies are the best, they are at earth fare and wholefoods right now! just grabbed some today!

      • http://www.TheTinyTerror.com Amy Lauren

Oh yay! I will check Earth Fare then. I know I haven’t seen them at HT or Publix, but I haven’t been to Earth Fare in a few weeks.

Best of luck you to, Jeanette, in your future ‘non-running’ career! Running and I take a break every summer (1 run/week if that) from May-September…so I hope that our relationship will last through some more fall/winter/spring seasons…but I get it. Especially when it starts to feel like a chore instead of something that used to give you a lot of joy!

I’m a fan of all things berry. I actually ate 3 pounds of blueberries this week because they were so inexpensive…and I mean…I couldn’t let them go to waste. My skin might be turning a little bit blue…

    • http://www.fitwomensweekly.com TaylorR

That’s smart to take the summer break! I am all about berries, especially strawberries! oh man. My husband is going to be blue soon too from all the blueberries he consumes!

  • Jeanette

I was laughing at the ceremonial burying of the shoes. I will keep them for the few impromptu runs I do. In fact I ran down the hallway at work and it was an enjoyable 100 yards :).

I’m nervous about the run since I haven’t really trained but whatves’ its about the adventure and not the time. Be prepared for a LOT of instagrams and a super slow pace. I’m going to map out the “potty stops”.

    • http://www.fitwomensweekly.com TaylorR

Bahaha, can’t wait! Yes, already trying to figure out where to store my phone! And trying out the camelback for the first time!

  • Sheena

That’s like 18.5 kms…. that’s a pretty decently long run for someone saying goodbye to running :) I hope you two have fun though!!

Mint chocolate chip ice cream is the bomb but granny smith apples totally take the cake over pink ladies :)

    • http://www.fitwomensweekly.com TaylorR

What can I say, when we go, we go big! out with a bang, right!? haha

  • http://itzlinz.com Linz @ Itz Linz

ice cream flavor? cake batter all the way!

    • http://www.fitwomensweekly.com TaylorR

oh yes, that is up there!

  • http://girlgoneveggie.com Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie

Frozen yogurt is so good! And your niece is super cute!

    • http://www.fitwomensweekly.com TaylorR

Thanks! I think she’s pretty adorable!

  • http://thefitfork.com Jennifer F

A friend retiring from running, whaaaaat?

BTW, I’m not a chip person either, but I could totally scarf down a pint of dulce leche ice cream.

    • http://www.fitwomensweekly.com TaylorR

Haha, it was an awesome way to retire! Dulce De Leche… yes, I think I deserve that!!

  • LouAnne Stachowski

I love lots of colors, but I’m currently a big fan of neons. I totally love the smell of honeysuckle. I love my water, but also enjoy cup of tea and coffee. I love to walk, especially hiking. I could not possibly pick one person I love the most from my husband, kids, and grandsons. I too love a good salad, and soups. I could probably live on soup and salad, although I’ve been craving fresh fruit and veggies lately. The one junk food I make sure I have enough calories for is ice cream. Light, full fat, soft, hand dipped, most favors…I just love my ice cream. Which is why I’m so proud that I can now scoop out a 6 oz dish of the stuff and be content. :). I also couldn’t pick a favorite book…too many to choose from. My favorite veggie would fresh anything, fruit…nope, couldn’t pick just one of those either. My favorite season is autumn, so it’s probably a good thing that I live up north (although I’m not too fond of winter!).

    • http://www.fitwomensweekly.com TaylorR

Thanks for sharing LouAnne! Love all your favorites! Fresh fruit and veggies are on my crave list right now! The heat makes me want ice cold fruit for breakfast lunch and dinner!

  • http://delightsanddelectables.com Brittany @ Delights and Delectables

I didn’t know you were in Charleston!! I was just there last week on vacation!

    • http://www.fitwomensweekly.com TaylorR

Thats where you went!! oh man!
