Sounds harsh but sometimes the truth is harsh. A new study just revealed that people that are overweight and obese have a big chance of having a smaller brain… or more that their brain has shrunk.

How we are today affects how we will be years from now, when research (brain scans) was conducted on older individuals (over the age of 70) the data was crazy! The average brain of the overweight people were 8 yrs older than of the leaner crowd and when I mean older I also mean smaller…their brains had literally shrunk over time. They were actually 6% smaller, and for the obese crowd? 8% smaller!

These percentages might not sound too far off, but 8% is equivalent to a 16 year aging difference in the brain.

So why does it matter if your brain is smaller? Shrinkage is related to dimentia, memory loss and other “oldstimers” as my grandmother refers to older people’s memory issues.

The jury is still out on the actually process of why this all happens, but I think it’s pretty evident that if you want to stay on top of your mental came not just today but 20+ years down the line that is not only important but crucial to take care of yourself and your body.

Just a few of the hypothesized ideas for High BMI and Shrinking Brain include:

  • More fat= higher chance of plaque buildup in the arteries for less blood flow to the brain.
  • High insulin levels and type 2 diabetes tend to accompany being overweight and are risk factors for brain tissue loss and dementia.
  • “Deborah Gustafson at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, who previously found that overweight women had less brain tissue than their leaner counterparts, questions whether obesity is driving brain atrophy or vice versa. She points out that brain atrophy in the frontal and temporal lobes, which also control eating behaviour and metabolism, could cause weight gain.”
