Of course diets come and go, there’s the low carb diets, the low fat diets, the liquid diets, the protein diets and so on and so on. But these diets come and go, only a few plans termed “diets” actually stick around and they are less like diets and more like nutrition lifestyles… think the Mediterranean diet (those Italians look amazing), the clean eating diet (this is my lifestyle) and the growing in popularity paleo diet.
What’s the Paleo Diet?
The paleo diet goes back into history by ten thousand years and it’s an effort to replicate the pre-agricultural, hunter/gather diet…basically the “cavemen diet” for the paleolithic era. It’s based on lean meat, fruits, vegetables, eggs and nuts. Now I know, you’re probably wondering how it’s different from the clean eating and Mediterranean diet… the Mediterranean is based on more grains, dairy, legumes, and oils (healthy fats) and clean eating is based on a combination of both in my opinion.
There have been a few studies on the paleo diet, one being between the paleo and the Mediterranean where the Paleo came out on top… it yieled greater improvements in glucose tolerance (helping with fat storage and cravings) and great decrease in waist size… SWEET!
Should You Consider the Paleo Diet?
Well, I do have one big qualm about this diet… the fact that you’re suppose to stay away from grains- whole grains, rye, everything can make it pretty hard. And not to mention these are healthy carbs to include especially in a healthy, fitness active lifestyle. I am still convinced that the diet of choice is clean eating because you get the best of both worlds!
I haven’t tried eating like this to the full extent, but I do have some trainer colleagues that life like this and say they love it. One guy stuck to the Paleo diet, increased his calories to 5,000 and gained 20 lbs of muscle over a pretty short time frame. But that could happen from any healthy eating program.
