The cold is setting in, I have a few colleagues around the country that are already stuck indoors because of snow and freezing temperatures. Even if you’re able to get outdoors chances are you’re covered head to toe with pants and sleeves… which means no sun for you!
During the winter, the blues aren’t just a rumor. People really do get seasonal blues during this time of year. But it’s not just because you’re not out and about enjoying the day outside, you might be low in some vitamins too!
For example… we’ve all heard of Vitamin D and I am sure you’ve heard that you get it from being out in the sun. As a matter of fact just 10-15 minutes of exposure can fuel you up on this vitamin. But what if you’re not getting that time? Then you might want to look to taking a supplement.
What’s Vitamin D For?
Vitamin D is needed for calcium to be properly absorbed by the bones. If your supply is short then your bloodstream will get what it needs from your bones, leading to persistent leg cramps and a weaker bones .
Are you taking a calcium supplement? Then chances are, unless your calcium is fortified with Vitamin D, you’re not getting enough to handle the increased calcium intake. How much do you need? 400-800 IU which you can get from the time spent in the sun or from a vitamin supplement.
Having A Vitamin D Deficiency?
A recent report states that 70% of people have a vitamin D defiency during the winter! That’s a pretty significant amount, don’t you think?
Here are a few symptoms of being short on Vitamin D…
- Weak Bones
- Muscle pain and weakness
- Increased risk of cancers
Foods High In Vitamin D
- Cod liver oil
- Herring
- Shitake Mushrooms
- Catfish
- Button Mushrooms
- Salmon
- Milk
- Oatmeal
Bottom Line…
Get your vitamin D on! Look at your diet and decide if it packs enough of the vitamin in your nutrition so you can keep healthy during these blue, cold times! Keep your bones as healthy as possible!
