What To Do With Tofu

by TaylorR on June 28, 2010

Gotta admit, I am liking this stuff!

I have recently gotten into eating tofu for lunch as part of my bridal workout plan (less than 2.5 months left to go!)… it’s easy because it takes on the flavor of whatever you add to it. So I cube it up, put some spices on it, a little drizzle of something and then my lunch is ready to go…

I have never been a big tofu eater because of the fact that I have few idea of how to fix it but in the past week I have been experimenting and I am on my way to some great tofu ideas.

For example…

Tofu Protein Soufflé

One of the meals I have learned is to throw in a serving a tofu, a scoop of vanilla protein, a dollop of peanut butter and 1 egg white into the Magic Bullet, then pour the batter in a bowl and microwave for 45-50 seconds. It makes like a souffle and actually taste really great.

Tofu Peanut Butter Pudding

Pudding... I think vanilla extract will make it perfect!

I also like to do the same thing but take out the egg white and eat it as a desert as a pudding replacement. I love anything peanut butter flavor. I use extra firm tofu for this.

Mustard and Garlic Tofu

For my lunch, I have been drizzling some honey mustard, a sprinkle of garlic and a dash of pepper. I heat it up in the microwave and there you go. Of course this isn’t all I eat for lunch, but it is the “main dish”. I make sure to get more calories in with raw nuts and fresh fruit as a side.

But I need help, this whole tofu thing is so new to me… so how do you fix it? What are some secrets and tips so I can spruce up my tofu experience and not eat the same thing every day!

Tofu is made of soy beans, and so I am trying to limit myself to eating it just 3 times a week because soy contains estrogen which can play with your body’s natural hormones. And I will admit I have extremely low hormone levels that are out of wack, and I don’t think it would be wise to mess with them!

Nutritional Info Of Tofu

1/2 cup has just 90 calories, 10 grams of protein, 2 grams of carbs and 22% of the RDA of Calcium! If comparing it to beef at the same amount, tofu has more protein, less than 1/3 of the calories and much much less fat.

Awesome to see you getting into tofu. Took me a long, long time to take that plunge!

One of my favorite tofu dishes is a simple grilled tofu. Buy extra firm tofu and cut it into thick slabs. Spice it up with your favorite spices and a little olive oil and put it on the grill for a few minutes on each side. (You can also slather it in BBQ sauce and grill it too.)

Thanks for the recipe ideas!

Thanks Jodi! I will definitely give the grill a try.
